We’ve all heard that the lotions and sunscreens we rub into our skin may contain harmful chemicals, but a 2020 FDA testing of sunscreens has confirmed that. There are six active ingredients which are commonly used in sunscreens. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and into the body and may linger for days or even weeks. In addition, blood testing has reviled that even after just one application of sunscreen, these chemicals will show up in the blood in levels that exceed the FDA’s safe recommendation. While further testing is needed to determine just how harmful these active ingredients can be, previous research by the FDA has suggested that the toxins in sunscreens can disrupt hormones, lead to infertility, birth issues and perhaps even cancer.

As health-conscious individuals and parents, we realize the need to protect ourselves from the harmful rays of the sun which can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. Because of that, the sun screen business has become a multi-million-dollar industry in the United States.

As the FDA began requiring sunscreen manufacturers to do more testing of their products, it was discovered that some of the most common active ingredients include avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and octinoxate. Tests on individuals’ blood after applying sunscreen showed concentrations of these chemicals as much as 500 times the recommended levels. In addition to the risks to humans, some of these chemicals have contributed to the killing of coral reefs in the ocean, leading states like Hawaii to ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate beginning in 2021.

So how do we stay safe from the sun’s rays and avoid using harmful sunscreens?

  • Avoid sun if you can between 11 and 4, when UV radiation is at its peak
  • Use organic mineral-based sunscreens
  • Wear clothing that has built-in UPF sun protection
  • If you’re prone to burn or have a family history of skin cancer, limit your time in the sun

If you have children, it’s vital to be cautions when using sunscreens because we just don’t know the long-term effects on growing bodies. For children, look for mineral-based sunscreens that contain the ingredients zinc oxide, or titanium dioxide. Both of those ingredients are considered safe according to the FDA. Mineral sunscreen, formulated correctly by a reputable company is very effective. Products that contain Zinc and titanium provide a broad-spectrum of protection that is every bit as effective as a chemical sunscreen.
